Cartoon Protesters Direct Anger at U.S.

QALAT, Afghanistan - Police killed four people Wednesday as Afghans enraged over drawings of the Prophet Muhammad marched on a U.S. military base in a volatile southern province, directing their anger not against Europe but America. The U.S. base was targeted because the United States "is the leader of Europe and the leading infidel in the world," said Sher Mohammed, a 40-year-old farmer who suffered a gunshot wound while taking part in the demonstration in the city of Qalat. "They are all the enemy of Islam. They are occupiers in our country and must be driven out," Mohammed said.

clipper's remarks: I don't know about you but I'm just sick and tired of all this. I really am. It sounds to me that freedom of speech is something else we're suppose to give up and I'm protesting for my rights!!!! Can I say "Get off my back already!" ?? Grow up and get a life. This is just another excuse. As Americans, my family, friends and myself have already sacrificed much in an attempt to aid restoration of law, order and peace and this demonstration of lawlessness, death and destruction, as far as I'm concerned, is not only a slap in the face (for a milder analogy of what I'm really feeling), but is also a total lack of regard for anyone but themselves. My humble opinion is everyone is entitled to their beliefs but don't expect me to believe as you. So is this a sorry excuse to blame Americans or is this a country that prefers to live in the violence they breed on their own without anyone else's help everyday, and yet are so quick to blame others for the grief in their country(s). The free world is invading the Earth. Communication systems have put freedom mems into every society on the planet. Oppressed peoples are learning that things can be different. It's in the news, the literature, TV, movies, music, research, advertising, product labeling and national policies. The free world is pushing it's ideas to anyone they find.
I once got punched in the nose for sticking my 2 cents where it wasn't wanted. I learned to let others have their ideas and I'll have mine. Sometimes I'm right but sometimes I'm wrong.
To US there is nothing wrong with our freedom based lifestyle. We see atrocities and try to stop them no matter what. We push our values on others without thinking of what it will do to their society. We cause stress, frustration and sadness. We disregard their religious beliefs unless there is some way to justify them.
A suicide bomber believes entirely in their values. So much so they are willing to die to prove it. They are angry, they are hurt and they are jealous. We attempt to buy over nations thru aid and loans. We attempt to show the world our lifestyle and push it into their neighborhoods. We entice their young adults (Their future establishments) with our unruly ways.

meme Pronunciation (mm)
n.
A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.
[Shortening (modeled on gene) of mimeme, from Greek mimma, something imitated, from mimeisthai, to imitate; see mimesis.]
Noun 1. meme - a cultural unit (an idea or value or pattern of behavior) that is passed from one generation to another by nongenetic means (as by imitation); "memes are the cultrual counterpart of genes"
acculturation, culture - all the knowledge and values shared by a society
biological science, biology - the science that studies living organisms
(philosophy) meme - /meem/ [By analogy with "gene"] Richard Dawkins's term for an idea considered as a replicator, especially with the connotation that memes parasitise people into propagating them much as viruses do.

Memes can be considered the unit of cultural evolution. Ideas can evolve in a way analogous to biological evolution. Some ideas survive better than others; ideas can mutate through, for example, misunderstandings; and two ideas can recombine to produce a new idea involving elements of each parent idea.

The term is used especially in the phrase "meme complex" denoting a group of mutually supporting memes that form an organised belief system, such as a religion. However, "meme" is often misused to mean "meme complex".

Use of the term connotes acceptance of the idea that in humans (and presumably other tool- and language-using sophonts) cultural evolution by selection of adaptive ideas has become more important than biological evolution by selection of hereditary traits. Hackers find this idea congenial for tolerably obvious reasons.

culture
The word culture, from the Latin root colere (to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor), generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activity significance. Different definitions of "culture" reflect different theoretical orientations for understanding, or criteria for valuing, human activity. Anthropologists most commonly use the term "culture" to refer to the universal human capacity to classify, codify and communicate their experiences symbolically. This capacity is a defining feature of the genus Homo.

Culture as civilization
Many people today use a conception of "culture" that developed in Europe during the 18th and early 19th centuries. This idea of culture then reflected inequalities within European societies, and between European powers and their colonies around the world. It identifies "culture" with "civilization" and contrasts the combined concept with "nature". According to this thinking, one can classify some countries as more civilized than others, and some people as more cultured than others. Thus some cultural theorists have actually tried to eliminate popular or mass culture from the definition of culture. Theorists like Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) or the Leavises regard culture as simply the result of "the best that has been thought and said in the world” (Arnold, 1960: 6), thus labeling anything that doesn't fit into this category as chaos or anarchy. On this account, culture links closely with social cultivation: the progressive refinement of human behavior. Arnold consistently uses the word this way: "... culture being a pursuit of our total perfection by means of getting to know, on all the matters which most concern us, the best which has been thought and said in the world".

An opinion is a person's ideas and thoughts towards something. It is an assessment, judgement or evaluation of something. An opinion is not a fact, because it is not possible to prove (or disprove) an opinion.

For example, one may claim that strawberry is a better tasting flavor of ice cream than vanilla. Another might claim that vanilla is a better tasting flavor. (If you disagree with either of these opinions, substitute chocolate, butter pecan, or whichever flavor of ice cream you think tastes better than vanilla, for my use of strawberry.) The original claim is an opinion; it is neither true nor false, it is simply a claim which can neither be proven nor disproven. Now, if one claims that strawberry is a more popular flavor than vanilla, that is no longer an opinion, it is a fact, which can be proven, (or in this case disproven) by showing another fact, that more vanilla ice cream is sold than strawberry. (The presumption being that people buy ice cream in order to consume it, thus, more purchases of vanilla would indicate vanilla is more popular than strawberry since people would not purchase ice cream simply to throw it away.)

The issue of whether strawberry ice cream tastes better than vanilla ice cream is still, however, arbitrary and nonprovable, and thus remains an opinion (as would the opposite opinion that vanilla ice cream tastes better than strawberry. Note that simply because a particular opinion is more popular still does not make the opposite opinion incorrect or wrong). It would not be permissible for someone else to claim that either opinion on which tastes better is wrong because opinions are still arbitrary and can neither be proven nor disproven. It is permissible to state that one disagrees with the opinion. It is, however permissible to claim that the statement that strawberry is mo

I'm sorry for pushing my opinion on this subject but too many people believe they are always right.

My goodness...what a talkative group! I've always wanted a 'forum' where people from across the world could talk about their cultures, attitudes and worldviews...without getting ugly. Know of one?

Regarding being "always right". My thoughts have always been "If I didn't think I was right, I'd change my opinion!" (where's that smilie?)

It means that given our history and traditions, it is incorrect to imply that we (meaning Westerners) are INTRINSICALLY or INHERENTLY less violent and irrational than Muslims.
by skwirlinator on 2-11-2006 11:11 AM
Correct! Not incorrect. We cover up our darkside better with deeds and money and speculation.
Ask Japan how vicious we can be. Remember tho, We have better technology now. Better use a multiplier on that.
Given OUR history and traditions, compared to theirs, We are still babies...With sharp Teeth and Claws.

ya know skwirlinator, I hate to say this but a lot of what you wrote was sort of over my head. That's not to say I didn't read it but I was having difficulty finding the relevance in some of it because it seemed to jump around in various but somewhat similar topics?

You have a blog somewhere that you post a lot of meme stuff? ;o)
