FORT HOOD, Texas – A soldier opened fire at a U.S. Army base in Fort Hood, Texas on Thursday, unleashing a stream of gunfire that left 12 people dead and 31 wounded. Authorities killed the gunman, and apprehended two other soldiers suspected in what appears to be the worst mass shooting at a U.S. military base.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a news conference. He said all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

"It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Cone said.

Cone said the soldier used two handguns in the attack. It was not clear if the gunman had stopped to reload.

This makes me think of the people who said that the Virginia Tech shootings might have been prevented or caused less harm if the students and faculty had been armed. However, if they can't stop a guy from shooting 43 people on an army base full of trained soldiers, how could they expect students and faculty members with little or no training to do the same?

It's time now to step back and let the FBI and ACID do their work. Like Seung-Hui Cho, the main shooter is dead, so answers as to his motives can only be inferred, not elicited. In the wake of such an incident, many assumptions get made, and, once public, are hard to overcome. One blog called Cho a "chinaman" who was a recent immigrant who hadn't aassimilated (he had, in fact, come from South Korea at age 8 and had lived here 12 years). The Oklahoma City bombing was assumed to be the work of arab terrorists, but proved to be an American veteran. Major Nidal Hasan was born in the US (and went to Virginia Tech).

Update: At the press conference, it was announced that the Major Hasan was not dead, and that one of the responders who was reported dead is also alive. This underscores what I said in my earlier comment about letting the investigators do their work before drawing conclusions.

Other information is that the major was the lone shooter, and that one person who was being held was released.

REMARKABLE SIMILARITIES

1. Doctor (Major) Nidal Hassan, age 38, is a U.S. born Muslim. He acted alone without an accomplice. He was involved with treating post traumatic stress victims of Iraq War violence. (readers may fill in the rest.)

2. February 25, 1994, another US-born doctor, this one of Jewish descent, Baruch Goldstein, 38, wearing the uniform of an army reservist, burst into a Mosque in Hebron, as people gathered for Friday morning prayers, and fired up to 100 bullets at worshipers, killing between 30 and 54 Palestinians.

He was involved in treating victims of Arab-Israeli violence.It is reported that his hatred became so intense that eventually he refused to treat Palestinians.

I believe that this is synchronicity, i.e., meaningful coincidence, in the Jungian sense. As this story unfolds, a congruency, i.e., similarities, as it were, of all elements of both acts will become strikingly more apparent and hopefully provide understanding to stave of rushes to judgment.

What a time do you thin do they need for an investigation to clear the basic facts:
How many persons did shoot and kill?
What did occur before the shooting?
I'm sure, they know it already. If two men ran Amok at one day - as we read was a time of hours gone between the shots, also won't 1 person be able to do it (or do you think, that a drugged insane pride-of his-homeland-and-flag idiot can resist the half US-army in weapons for hours?!
MP and other police units locked the whole district - this makes me believe, that they have to hide and veil something.
But on the other eye and sie of my brain I know, that it is usual in every accident or govern. action as well as all public or military offices in USA [and contamining the whole western world during the last 20 years], that at first is (get ?) spoken any silly lie, than is all filled with speculation and a little bit of truth, sealed with fog - after this follows mostly the big lie, meanwhile good constructed and with film or photo evidence sticked.
In this case they cannot avoid, that the evidents will speak, but what they will tell us? Did they try a new fighter drug or the alien-made Hero-Ray from mothership?
In case of doubt is the Taliban the guilty one! Those coward evil terrorists do hide in the mountains and caves and don't come out to fight with their Kalaschnikow against the bombers, helis, drones, new fighters or tanks (tanks seem to have a lot of disfunctions?!)! Those villains are making crazy the strong pride of America! He is ready to fight, so he must do so!
What will affect the USA if all the troops came back during 4 - 6 months? Don't be afraid of it! They won't !

But the evidence is made, that the US soldiers are very good trained in shooting and killing.
